As a business owner, I liked it. But maybe too simplistic. (2010-08-06)

I'm a business owner and I enjoy business and real estate investing. Good principles are taught in this book about using real estate to enhance your investing desires, however it may lead first timers down a path of "THIS ISN'T HOW THE BOOK SAID IT WOULD BE!" Use your common sense and a good support group of real estate agents and accounts and possibly lawyers to help you embark on the exciting field of real estate

Very Good Info! (2010-05-20)

Very good info and well written. Easy to read and understand. Not at all boring. But it is geared more towards multi-family investing, than towards single rental homes, although many of the concepts are transferable.

Great book. (2010-04-24)

This is an outstanding book for anyone considering real estate investments. I highly recommend it.

Detailed book on Real Estate Investing (2010-04-06)

This is definitely a very detailed book on real estate investing (especially residential real estate). Easy to read no unnecessary nonsense (just to fill up the book).

You can definitely tell that this book is from somebody who is breathing and living real estate investing. And he is very detail oriented.

Basic and Already Outdated (2009-12-21)

Both the mortgage and real estate markets have crashed since this was published. The game has changed. Find something more current to read.

ISBN: 354060720X
Pages: 514

Price: $74.95

In the 15 years since publication of the first edition, Steps to Follow has gained a worldwide reputation among professionals as a unique practical guide to the treatment of neurologically impaired patients.

This second, completely updated edition incorporates significant practical advances in early and later neurorehabilitation and in the understanding of the problems confronting both patients and those who work with them.

The relevant therapeutic activities to improve functional ability and quality of life following a stroke are described in detail with the help of 750 photos showing patients in action during treatment.

-Practical ways in which patients can be helped to interact more normally with their environment and so regain their independence, in spite of the perceptual disorders often associated with hemiplegia
-More detailed explanation of hand function and more in-depth analysis of normal walking
-Revised chapters on the various therapeutic activities, including new ways to retrain selective movements and prevent or counteract increases in muscle tone
-Deeper understanding of abdominal muscle activity, which is relevant to retraining balance reactions and sitting and standing
-A new chapter demonstrating how David Butler's concept of the mobilization of neural structures throughout the body can be of inestimable value
-Examples of ways in which therapists, nurses and relatives can help to avoid the development of secondary complications such as pain and loss of range of motion or overcoming existing difficulties
-Ways in which the patient can maintain mobility and continue to make progress even after cessation of treatment, by exercising at home and participating in sporting and other leisure activities

Good guide for caregivers (2010-06-07)

The book gives a well presented description of the ailment and how to go about the rehabilitation of the patient.

wrong edition (2010-02-27)

way to old of an edition for me to use for school, I'm not sure if I read it wrong or it wasnt' listed. I can't get back to the description.

Good book, but advanced (2009-04-12)

A very good book, but advanced for the new grad (at least it was for me). It does contain wonderful information and utilizes NDT. It certainly is easier to understand after an intro NDT course teaches the basics. I dig this book out from time to time to freshen up my skills with CVA patients.

Great Book (2008-10-15)

Great book with many guidelines for physios and homecarer's. Comprehensive how to's with many pictures. It's really a steps to follow manual.

A must for any therapist working with adult CVA! (1998-08-21)

Patricia Davies Gives very descriptive, practical approaches that work. Even if you have not had specific NDT training, you can, as a therapist, learn from, and follow her approach. There are plenty of pictures to help guide. If you are a physical or occupational therapist even attempting to work with adults who have had neuro. dysfunction, you owe it to them to read this book!

Natural Dog Training

Author: Kevin Behan
Publisher: NDT Press
Publication date: 2009-02-25
ISBN: 0578013630
Pages: 296
Rating:
Price: $27.55

Natural Dog Training is about how dogs see the world and what this means in regards to training. The first part of this book presents a new theory for the social behavior of canines, featuring the drive to hunt, not the pack instincts, as seminal to canine behavior. The second part reinterprets how dogs actually learn. The third section presents exercises and handling techniques to put this theory into practice with a puppy. The final section sets forth a training program with a special emphasis on coming when called.

Glean good information (2010-08-28)

This book has a different perspective about dog training, one that is NOT generally in conflict with positive training and I am finding it valuable to glean from. Reading through would be quite a challenge (one I don't intend to tackle) as it is poorly written, edited, and formatted. That has been commented on many times; the current version is apparently no better than the first (I have the 2nd) but Kevin has ideas worth reading and utilizing. Every dog is different and some may need a truly personalized approach, combining several training methods. Kevin's are well worth knowing. Also check out Neil Sattin's site, [...] The Best Long Dog Leash for Training and Play - 50 Feet Long, 1 Inch Nylon, Visible, Durable, Strong, and Made in the USA

Kevin Behan has a gift... (2009-11-02)

...However, this book must be carefully read and pondered in order to 'get' his pearls of wisdom. My copy is full of underlined and highlighted passages which I have read over and over. I believe K. B. is a true advocate for dogs and has a great deal to offer all of us who have dogs in our lives. Even though there is no perfect dog trainer/behaviorist, and one would do well to study others' philosophies and techniques, he is at the top of his profession and in a class by himself. That said, I have to wonder where his editor was before this book got to print. It really is irritating to sift through so many misspelled words, poor punctuation, run-on sentences, and the like. Also, I wonder if Mr. Behan could have benefited from someone's help in the task of getting his wonderful ideas translated into printed words with a more concise organization to them. I have wished that the book included an index and/or boxes in the page margins with key points outlined. I hope I haven't put off anyone from getting this book because the information in it is just exceptional.

Returned the book for a refund (2009-09-27)

I received this book two days ago and am returning it for a refund today. This is the first time I've ever returned anything to Amazon. The author's prose is almost unreadable. The book is full of typos and non sequiturs. There wasn't what I expected... a detailed step by step program for training your dog. Instead there were ramblings about dogs' wolf ancestry, it's prey instincts/behaviors and other filler verbiage to compose a book that could be in my opinion much briefer. And at a price of almost $25 this added insult to injury.

Look elsewhere (2009-04-10)

This book is very poorly written and relies heavily on the use of choke chains and pinch collars (& the author clearly tacitly supports shock collars). While the author may not use them for punishment, the bottom line is that he uses them - and all the fallout that is associated with their use may well come along for the ride.

The idea itself has much to offer. It dismisses dominance/alpha theory (and well it should; those ideas are outdated and misguided) and offers an alternative to food training that focuses more on redirecting a dog's ENERGY (versus just behavior) and bonding through PLAY (rather than food). It is great for my high-drive Border Collie mix, and my brain-in-her-nose Beagle mix is also responding. It is also easy to incorporate into positive reinforcment methods for a blended, whole-dog approach.

But the book itself is a disaster. More enlightened, humane, and - frankly - readable proponents of this theory/method are Neil Sattin and Lee Charles Kelley. Find their web sites instead.

Mind Blowing Perspective (2009-02-21)

This book has change the way I look at and understand my dogs. This isn't the kind of book you can read in one weekend - I find that I need time for the ideas and theories to soak in fully, then I will re-read again. Even if you don't intend to train your dog using Behan's methods, the dog training community should be giving credence to his understanding of dogs and how they feel. This book and Suzanne Clothiers "Bones Would Rain From the Sky" should be the most read books on dog training - or more importantly understanding dog's feelings and how to use that understanding to build a better relationship with your pets.

The Social Costs of Pornography: A Statement of Findings and Recommendations

Authors: Mary Anne Layden, Mary Eberstadt
Publisher: The Witherspoon Institute
Publication date: 2010
ISBN: 098149112X
Pages: 61
Rating:
Price:

Since the beginning of the internet age, pornography has been consumed in greater quantities than ever before in human history, and its content has grown more graphic. Recent research suggests that pornography consumption - especially consumption of a more hard-core or violent sort - has negative effects on individuals and society. More studies are necessary, but a growing body of research strongly suggests that for some users pornography can be psychologically addictive, and can negatively affect the quality of interpersonal relationships, sexual health and performance, and social expectations about sexual behavior. Widespread pornography consumption appears to pose a serious challenge to public health and to personal and familial well-being. With concerted action from legislators, the therapeutic community, educators, policymakers, and responsible corporate leaders, however, some of the negative effects of pornography consumption can be combated. This monograph, The Social Costs of Pornography: A Statement of Findings and Recommendations, is the fruit of an inquiry begun at a consultation held in Princeton, New Jersey, in December 2008, sponsored by the Witherspoon Institute and cosponsored by the Institute for the Psychological Sciences. This consultation, which sought to estimate the social costs of pornography, was the first multifaceted, multidisciplinary, scholarly exploration in the internet age of a subject that is critically important to the health and well-being of many Americans: the hidden but real social toll of the current consumption of pornography - especially internet pornography - on an unprecedented scale.

"Victimless" - yeah, right! (2010-07-04)

As per the Executive Summary of this social commentary, "Widespread pornography consumption appears to pose a serious challenge to public health and to personal and familial well being. With concerted effort from legislators, the therapeutic community, educators, policymakers, and responsible corporate leaders, however, some of the negative effects of pornography consumption can be combated." Makes sense to me!

Dangerously Misinformative (2010-06-27)

I have to agree with the other reviewer, Marty Klein. This manuscript is blatantly misinformative about the research on pornography, with the pretty clear goal of rolling back first amendment protections for free speech they find offensive. As the other reviewer noted, the "explosion" of pornography, particularly on the internet, has not been met by a wave of social problems, but quite the reverse. Sexual assaults, domestic violence, have gone down. Teens are waiting longer to have sex (although many still do, of course), are more likely to use condoms when they do, and are less likely to get pregnant (and more likely to stay in school and do well on standardized tests). The authors here are inventing a crisis where there is none.

The authors' intent appears to legistlate their own moral views. That's fine actually, free speech protects those kinds of movements. It's just unfortunate to see such efforts masquerade as science.

a dangerous call for censorship (2010-05-24)

Everything you need to know about this book is contained in its proposal to create laws that would allow people to sue for being involuntarily exposed to obscene material. That's exactly how much the authors fear sexuality, and how little respect they have for the average adult's emotional stability, or for America's Constitutional system--which values free expression over the tender sensitivities of a few angry or frightened people.
The authors are apparently completely ignorant about the true nature of pornography in America (the vast majority shows happy, smiling people) and dreadfully misinformed about the impact it has on society. According to the FBI, since pornography flooded America through the internet 10 years ago, the rates of sexual assault, child molestation, and divorce have gone DOWN. Why are the authors pretending that pornography causes these outcomes, when law enforcement data shows exactly the reverse?

The Social Costs of Pornography. (2010-05-18)

Fifty-four of the ablest people in law, medicine, political theory, philosophy, religious studies, history and a host of other disciplines got together at Princeton University at the end of 2008 to assess the social cost of pornography and what to do about it. "The Social Costs of Pornography: A Statement of Findings and Recommendations" is their report. It was released at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington on March 16, 2010. Anyone concerned with the pornogrification of our culture and what needs to be done about it should read this book. It contains recommendations for action by therapists, educators, journalists, private industry, celebrities, and government, including a call for the resumption of obscenity law enforcement by the Justice Department and legislation to permit civil suits for damages due to "negligent exposure of a minor or an unwilling adult to obscene materials."

Important for anyone to read who is concerned for teh deterioration of our society. (2010-05-03)

Short but informative and important information about the devistating effects of pornography. A beginning point for the research that needs to be done concerning pornography, and its damaging wake that touches multiple lives of a single user.

Facilitation Techniques based on NDT (2000-11-23)

This book is well written with many treatment ideas. It covers an abundant amount of activities/treatment techniques that could be used with any patient with neurological impairments. The pictures that supplement the ideas are very helpful. This book would benefit anyone who works with children or adults in any setting in the medical field. Even a great review for those who are already NDT certified!

Bringing It Home: England: The Ultimate Guide to Creating the Feeling of England in Your Home

Authors: Cheryl Maclachlan
Publisher: Clarkson Potter
Publication date: 1998-09-22
ISBN: 0517707829
Pages: 192
Rating:
Price: $40.00

Defining a national style is a difficult task, particularly in the European realm. With a constant intermingling of cultures, as accomplished author Cheryl MacLachlan observes, "History gets in the way." Yet with careful study and an astute eye--both of which MacLachlan displays in abundance--it is possible to discover a country's distinctive style. In this case it means a skillful blend of rich woodwork, botanical motifs, and strong graphics; interiors replete with idiosyncratic visual detail but still beckoning with comfort. Brimming with gorgeous photographs, the volume gives us a scrumptious room-by-room tour (including that very English form, the garden), serving up concise lessons on the history of English design and excellent analyses of what makes each element in the photos work, along with generous helpings of very specific suggestions on how to incorporate all the elements into our own homes. "Idea notebooks" in each chapter offer helpful at-a-glance particulars of key elements in each room type. And charming glimpses of real life (children having a tea party; a cat snoozing on an overstuffed chair; bunches of magazines leaning against a sofa) highlight the fact that these are not designer showrooms, but actual homes that are truly lived in and loved. --Amy Handy

Very TRADITIONAL English decorating book (2007-08-06)

This is a very TRADITIONAL (and Classical) English decorating book. It is not an "how-to" book at all, but rather, a visual journey throughout homes that are all decorated in the "Traditional" and/or "Classic" English style (in other words: this book is not about "modern" English decorating at all).

I own two other books by this outstanding author (Cheryl MacLachlan) and she always does such a nice job at taking readers into the world of European decorating, by showing a variety of homes in the various styles... as stated in the book's title.

If you own any of the Henrietta Churchill's books (ie: her books on decorating a 'la "English classical style") then you are probably familiar with Classical/Traditional English decorating. If not, browse through this book and/or Henrietta's many decorating books, and you will understand the English "classical" style a bit better.

One difference: The homes in this MacLachlan book are homes that are probably owned by middle-class English families, and are NOT owned by upper-class English families , --- such as all of Henrietta's books show. Therefore, if you want to decorate your home in English style, then this MacLachlan book is more doable & relavent to you. Personally, I like both author's books (MacLachlan's and Churchill's books) because together they show all the possibilities when incorporating Classical English decorating in your current home(s).

Perfectly lovely. (2002-05-18)

A warm and wonderful volume for any hopeless Anglophile. Great gift.

A Terrific Cultural Experience! (2001-10-14)

Author Cheryl MacLachlan writes "...'English style' refers to the unique constellation of elements - homegrown and foreign - that the English have taken as their own". This book shows you how to create a beautiful, charming English atmosphere in your home, and in your life.

My bedtime ritual now includes sitting down with a steaming cup of tea while browsing through every page of this book. After collecting and borrowing dozens of books on this topic, I find this one to be the most comprehensive and inspiring resource for the lover of anything English.

"Like a house, Bringing It Home - England is divided into rooms"...The book's chapters cover the following topics:

(1) The Substance of the English Style: common threads that unite all English homes, walls, motifs, graphics and everything out of the ordinary

(2) The Living Room: how to arrange furniture, select fabrics, and my favorite topic: how to create the look of a traditional English drawing room

(3) The Bedroom: creating a "cozy sanctuary", creating the romantic look (I can attest to the fact that her advice in this section works beautifully!), how to create the English look in your bath, and there is even a section on creating the look in a nursery!

(4) The Dining Room: special emphasis on creating a "tailored, handsome" look. Includes information on English china, porcelain and crystal. There is even a guide to selecting tables and chairs.

(5) The Garden: No book about English style would be complete without information on creating a traditional English garden. Includes a primer on the art of flower arrangement.

)6) The Kitchen: The floors, cabines, furnishings and "cooker" are all covered in this section as well as my very favorite subject on the pleasure of "taking tea". Oh, life is grand!!!!

(7) A Resource section which includes information on all the "English-style" essentials and where to find them. Includes a reading list and travel ideas.

The information is practical and inspiring, as are the beautiful photographs. I feel this is the best book on this topic anywhere.

5 Stars. Enjoy.

Absolutely The Best! (2000-02-24)

Being a lover of all things English, I have several books and this is the very best of all. This book is chock full of information on how to achieve the style, what makes it "English" and the photographs are fabulous. I have never read a book of this style that had so much research that went into it. I also enjoyed several receipes that were included and the section that dealt with the meaning of words and how Americans and British differ in their usage.

A nice variety of information about the English style (2000-02-21)

I like this book because it addresses a diverse range of topics on how to achieve the English style. It describes the origin of each decorating tradition, offering an explanation or rationale for why something is characterized as "English," rather than just laying out a blueprint to follow. I also liked that cooking was incorporated into the book, and several appealing photos of food and recipes are provided.

great for new pediatric PT (2002-02-12)

As a physical therapist new to pediatrics and early intervention, I found this book extremely helpful. I thought it was brief and included all the pertinent information. The illustrations and explanations are very helpful when learning handling/facilitation techniques with infants, and the rationale sections of the text are helpful for writing goals.

Good theme bad plot (2010-04-21)

Robin Cook books always brings out the new and vital scoops in medical field. Most of the time he translates into the good and readable novel -some times he fails to make a good plot -
Vital Signs brings out the upcoming medical money making machine "infertility clinics"
Positives:
1.Suspense: Even being the biology researcher I could not guess the enigma in getting the Chinese people in USA till the end of the book.
2.Location tour: It was interesting to read about the locations like Australia specially the deserted part of Australia, about Hongkong and China If you have sufficient patience then you will enjoy reading them
3. The tensions brought out specially into the womens undergoing fertility treatment was quite accurate.
Negative:
1. Dropping dead bodies -specially could have avoided most of them.
2. Initially the book dragged too much with the arguements of Husband and Wife and also the introduction to the Wendy was too much abrupt.

Overall I will rate this book as three stars: one for the novel idea, one for the location description and the third one because I am fan of Cook!

So-so, good for reading in the waiting room but little else (2009-09-16)

This book started off with a lot of promise. I received this book as a hand-me-down - I get many of my books this way - but the story quickly unraveled. Rather than stick with medicine, there's now espionage and attempted murder. While a good thriller can have medicine and murder all in one, this book is unfortunately not one of them.

I found myself plodding through the book, quickly reading it just so I could get to the end. This is the first Robin Cook book I have read, and from what I see in the reviews, this is not the best work. I might pick up another Cook book, but if I ever buy one, I will make sure to check the reviews first. The ending to this book was unsatisfying and disappointing, with no real solution. The whole conspiracy of the Women's Clinic was interesting, but fell flat on delivery in this book. It might provide a diversion in the waiting room or on a airplane, but really, it's not worth reading.

A travelogue masquerading as a medical thriller (2009-06-17)

This is another one of Robin Cook's travelogues; as in "Sphinx" and "Seizure," he sends characters on wild goose chases to exotic locales. "Vital Signs" details Marissa Blumenthal's globetrotting to the Australian outback, the Great Barrier Reef, the Walled City of Hong Kong, and the China coast. This is held together by a paper-thin plot about nefarious goings-on in a fertility clinic.

Reading this, I had the feeling that Cook loves to travel and rationalizes it as "research" for his novels. This is definitely one of his weaker efforts.

a total waste of time (2009-05-17)

As some one who typically enjoys spy thrillers and murder mysteries the back cover of this book looked like an interesting possibility. I was wrong. Robin Cooks attempt to capture your imagination fell far short. From the implausible world travels of the main character to her new found friends the whole thing was contrived and ridiculous. The whirl wind climax, complete with high level ties to the CDC and escape from a communist country was beyond ridiculous. Oh and the bodies that were left a long the way??? What ever became of them Marissa???? Save your time and a few bucks, look elswhere unless you just want to laugh at how poorly the story is told.

Cook goes after corporate medicine again (2008-05-19)

Robin Cook sticks with his strong suit-the lone individual doctor going after evil corporate medicine. While the plot is not one of the more believable--his protagonists do some pretty illogical things--it makes for some harrowing and enjoyable reading. Marissa Blumenthal makes a return from a previous book, but this time she is not only the white knight, she is also the victim. Really engaging book, just calls for a suspension of disbelief.

Guided Wave - NDT: Advanced Sensors for Pipeline Monitoring

Authors: Florin Octavian Turcu
Publisher: VDM Verlag
Publication date: 2009-09-30
ISBN: 3639203577
Pages: 136
Price: $86.00

Pipelines and piping systems are the main components of the oil & gas industry, being of crucial importance for the transportation of hydrocarbons over long distances or within power plants, refineries and industrial processing plants. The fact that these structures transporting fluids that are hazardous for the environment are often situated in the proximity of human settlements or are crossing natural heritage areas makes their integrity maintenance an extremely sensitive issue. Dr. Turcu? s book presents innovative sensors and algorithms for the continuous integrity monitoring of piping systems and pipeline infrastructures without interrupting their normal activity. The sensors are capable to detect defects from their early stages of formation and also to geometrically characterize them. Information on defect's geometry is extremely useful for their classification on a meaningful risk scale. This classification is of highly importance for further decisions that will be taken in order to avoid catastrophic environmental accidents like oil spills or gas pipeline rupture followed by fire or even explosion.
