1 customer reviews Disturbing, poetic, electrical whimsy!. May 5, 2004 EDDIE CURRENT, McKeever's sophmore graphic novel (following his uncompleted 5-issue TRANSIT) shines with originality, excitement, and compassion in a world of cruelty. The entire story takes places in 12 hours (it was originally published in 12 1-hour issues), and revolves around an inmate in a mental institution who decides to escape his confinement in order to become a superhero and save the world. And, with the help of a mail-order, battery-powered, electric suit, he sets out to do just that. Told from the point of view of a completely (but kindly) insane person, the story never lets up for a second, and you'll keep turning those pages until you wish there were more to turn. McKeever later tied this story (and TRANSIT) rather abstractly into the world of his crowning achievement, METROPOL, with surprisingly powerful results. EDDIE CURRENT is an absolute necessity for any fans of McKeever or anyone who enjoys a good, dark, funny, intelligent tale for grownups. Hunt this masterpiece down if you can! The hardcover edition collects all 12 issues (with a few extra pages cut back in that weren't in the comics), as well as a cover gallery and some sketchbook pages.
Eddy Current is insane. At least that's what the world deems him to be. The very same world he intends to save. A window of opportunity opens, literally, allowing our hero to escape the asylum he calls home. Bed-check isn't until 6am, giving him 12 hours of freedom to accomplish his hero-given quest. Joined by a massive wall-of-a-woman called Nun, Eddy will live an adventure filled with the depths of humanities darkest crevices, as well as the heights and power of friendship and redemption. A Don Quixote for the 21st century, Eddy Current will stay with you long after you've finished reading. From one of the most critically acclaimed graphic novelists of our time, Ted McKeever, this volume features all 12 issues of Eddy Current, plus unused art, and a slew of extras.

In this monograph a number of canonical problems in electromagnetic induction with applications to eddy current nondestructive evaluation are examined. The geometries involve a source in the form of a coil and a conductor in the form of a planar specimen. Analytical methods and scalar potentials are used throughout and emphasis is put on the method of truncated region eigenfunction expansions (TREE). This is a recently applied method and has the capability to greatly extend the class of problems that can be solved analytically. Closed-form expressions are provided for the magnetic field quantities, eddy currents and impedance of coils in axisymmetric and three-dimensional configurations. Original solutions are presented for ferrite-cored coils, coils near edges and arbitrarily shaped coils as well as for coils above cracks. In addition, existing analytical models are reformulated by using the TREE method and a critical examination of the literature in the last 30 years is also performed. The theory is presented in a self-contained manner, with full attention to the numerical details, so that the interested reader can reproduce and extend the results. In many cases experimental results are also provided to support the theoretical results. The monograph will be useful to both graduate and undergraduate students, engineers that are interested in understanding the mechanisms of eddy current induction as well as in quantitative results and research people active not only in this particular field but also in electromagnetic theory in general.
This major study of migrant labour in Lesotho, concentrating on the period between 1980 and 1940, considers the position of Basotho migrant workers in South Africa, Lesotho's dependency on migrant labour, and the social and cultural consequences on communities, when men are sent away to work. The author provides in-depth analysis of migrant labour drawing predominantly on primary historical sources, and bringing in aspects of political economy, and cultural and social history. Some of the central questions addressed are: balancing structure and agency; how Basotho migrants coped with death and mourning in the mining compounds; the social history of commercial beer-brewing and commercial sex in Lesotho; the relationship of these factors to the system of chieftainship; and missionaries and the British colonial demonstration. The narrative is framed by the histories of colonialism in Lesotho and South Africa, and assesses the impact of colonialism on the geopolitics of these two interdependent countries.
